Located on the southernmost part of the country of the Philippines is the region of Mindanao. It is the second largest region in the country, next to the region of Luzon and is comprise of the main island of Mindanao and numerous smaller islands. It is located in the central Philippines. The region derives its name from the Maguindanaons, a sultanate that thrived during the 18th and 19th century and has been recognized historically as the largest sultanate.

The region of Mindanao prides itself on having a culture that is unique from the other two regions of the Philippines. Unlike the regions of Luzon and Visayas, the region of Mindanao is predominantly comprised of Muslims and as such, was integral in the rich cultural heritage of the region. This is despite the fact that Christianity has slowly made its way into the region.

The Maranao Muslims in the southern Mindanao wear malong, which is a colorful garment and is worn on formal occasions. It is worn both by the men and women. The literature of Philippines has been greatly influenced by “daranaga” of the Maranao Muslims of Mindanao.

Mindanao is home to some of the most beautiful natural sceneries in the country, including Mount Apo, which is the highest peak in the country and a favorite of mountain climbers. It is from here that the travelers can view the Maria Cristina Falls, one of the most beautiful falls in the country and a prime contributor of hydroelectric power to the region.
