What to see in Strasbourg, things to do and tourist spots

Located on the border of France, Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region and also known as the European capital has strong German influences. It is home to several important European institutions such as the European Court of Human Rights. Grande Île or the “Great Island”, the old quarters of the city, has been classified as a World Heritage Site.

The biggest attraction of Strasbourg is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Built at a height of 142 meters, it is claimed to be the highest medieval building in Europe. Then there is the Musée Alsacien which has exhibits related to the Alsatian ways of living in the medieval times. The old quarters of the city, also known as “Petite France”, is where the Île River divides itself into several canals, pouring between the quaint timbered houses. This part of the old city has several restaurants and shops selling souvenirs. The strong influence of Germany can be seen in the architecture and cuisine of the city. The city also houses one of the oldest universities in Europe, the Strasbourg University.

The Alsace region of France is famous for its white wines and Strasbourg provides you with a sample of some of the best white wines in the world. Other attraction of the city is its Christmas market, one of the best in France. The stalls surrounding the Cathedral sell local cuisine including Vin Chaud or mulled wine. You can also buy local handicrafts and Christmas ornaments.

The best option to explore the city is by foot or bike.
