Visiting Lyon

What to see in Lyon, things to do and tourist spots

Edit This Page [ Edit This Page ]

Lyon is flanked by two hills - the Fourvière and Croix-Rousse and also between two rivers - the Rhone and the Saone. It is the second largest metropolitan city in France following Paris. With a history in textile manufacturing, the city is also known for its gastronomy. About 500 hectares of Lyon has been regarded as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was known as the City of Lights in the olden days. Lyon still lives up to its moniker by lighting up all its monuments and buildings every evening post sunset.

Just climb up the Fourvière hill and you will be rewarded with a breath-taking sight of the city. The Notre Dame Basilica is yet another fantastic site on the Fourvière hill. Another cathedral which is a must visit is the St-Jean. Built around the 12th century, the architecture represents the metamorphosis of Old Europe from Roman to Gothic. There is also the Musée des Beaux-Arts that has a large collection of ancient and medieval art across the world including Egyptian paintings and pieces from Monet, Picasso and others. Pay your respects to the ancient silk manufacturing industry of Lyon by paying a visit to the Musee de Tissus. Apart from fabrics dating around 2000 years ago, it also has on display, the partridge motif brocade of Marie Antoinette's bedchamber at Versailles. And if you are hungry, do not hesitate to visit any of the “bouchons” for a sample of some local, tasty French cuisine. The best time to visit the city is between November and January.
