The Sydney Opera house is located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is considered to be one of the world Heritage sites. The building was added to the UNESCO list of world heritage Site in the year 2007.
A Danish architect, Utzon, designed this building. There have been few other constructions in the 20th century which have been really popular with the general public but no other building can be considered as more popular or well known by the public than this opera house. It is considered to be one of the best performing arts venues. This venue of performing arts is famous the world over. There is a very regular inflow of tourists who visit Australia only because they want to see the Sydney opera house with their own eyes. The design of this building is a very modern one. It has many concrete shells. The radius of all these concrete shells is the same. These hemispheres form the roof of the building. 4.5 acres of land have been covered by this building. The total length of this building is more than 600 feet. It is 388 feet in width. 580 piers of concrete support the whole building. These piers are at some places present 25 meters below the sea level. The power supply which is given to the Sydney opera house is equal to the mount which will be needed to light a town which has 25,000 people in it. The electric cable which supplies light to this building is more than 645 kilometers in height.
The tiles which have been used to construct the roof are Swedish made. The color of these tiles is glossy white. These are matte cream. The appearance of the building over all is white although the tiles used in the construction are not all white in color. The quality of tiles used is exceptionally good. These are well maintained tiles. They can keep themselves clean and white. Although the tiles are of really good nature but still they are as well maintained as they are because of the regular maintenance by the official bodies.
The largest of the shells house The opera theater and the concert hall. The smaller theatres are located in the side shells. The shell form is chosen to show the height requirements as well as the entrance spaces.
The planning of this building started in the 1940s. Goossens was the director of this state who was himself very fond of performing arts and wanted to provide the right kind of platform for the propagation of such art. Keeping this in view the design of structures of this building was invited. This competition began in 1955. A total of 233 entries were received. The architects of 32 countries participated in this competition. The basic design opted by the officials for the construction of this opera house was produced by Utzon. He was asked for some changes in the plan which he made. He came to Australia in 1957 to help in the completion of this project as the supervisor of the project.
After giving the final touches to the construction plans, the actual construction of this plan started in the year 1959. The construction was completed in three major stages. The upper podium was constructed in the first stage which lasted four years. The second phase of construction was from 1963 till 1967 and the outer shells were constructed during this phase. The final phase completed in 1973 after 6 years of its beginning and the interior was completed in these six years.
